Early Language Focal Lesion Study - Project in Cognitive and Neural Development, UCSD

Dr. Doris Trauner and colleagues are studying how children develop language and learning skills over time, and how the brain reorganizes after early stroke. This study in particular looks at typically developing children and children who have had strokes in-utero or very early in life. We test various areas of development, such as language, attention, and motor abilities using standardized and experimental measures. At the ages of 2 and 5 years, participants receive MRI scans to track brain development. We are specifically looking for children between the ages of 7 months and 24 months who have suffered congenital stroke. This is a longitudinal study, and we would like to see the participants every 4 to 6 months when possible.

We have a second ongoing study of older children with congenital stroke. In this study, we are interested in the effects of seizures on intellectual and cognitive outcome. We are looking for children age 7 years to 12 years with congenital stroke to come to San Diego for testing. The testing includes an MRI scan, an EEG, and tests of language, attention, memory, reasoning, and intelligence. The study is longitudinal and we would like to see the children again one year after the initial testing, if possible.
